Celtics-Spurs game notes

There’s nothing better than waking up Sunday morning and turning on the TV to watch a nationally broadcast game. Actually, if KG were back in the lineup, that’d make it a lot better. The big guy has been out a handful of games, but was shown in the pre-game going through a workout this morning. Soon, young grasshopper fans, soon.

upei vs cbu. it’s over!

i left the confederation library a bit later than i had planned, so i showed up to the game almost right before it started. steph (a friend of mine who is visiting from edmonton) was there before i arrived and she said i missed a short ceremony honoring the players who are in their final season with the basketball teams.

it was high school day and the area behind the upei bench was pretty crowded. i felt a bit claustrophobic so we moved to the other side of the court, opposite CBU’s bench. that turned out to be a bit of a bad move because a) the most annoying fan woman *ever* was about two meters away from us and b) we really wished we could hear what the CBU coach was screaming at his team. oh well.

the annoying recording of the anthem played (my ears! why!?! why!?!) and the game started.

The Kingston Connection

With the OUA regular season winding down it’s an interesting weekend in the National Capital Region. I’m going skating on the Rideau Canal, finishing a public economics assignment and then maybe taking a little bit of me time. This grad school stuff is kind of heavy at times. Know what I mean Vern?

What? Oh, right, basketball blog.

WHY CAN’T THE STATS BE CORRECT?!

Is it seriously too much to ask that the CIS, OUA and stats i got from a game are actually the same?!!? Or that the CIS website not be a relic from the days when just having a website was cool?!

Hot drama Tuesday: Shaq to the Suns?

Right after I watched the Celts drop one to Cleveland, I checked ESPN and came across a rumour that said Shaq could be going to the Suns for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks. A few hours later that rumour turned into a rumoured done deal, pending a Shaq physical Wednesday in Phoenix to examine his hip.

I’m not sure what to think of this. On paper it works, but in reality, Shaq’s been lugging his 300 lb. ass all season. Whether he’s injured, just old, or half-assing it remains to be seen. If it revitalizes the big guy, the Lakers and Kobe could be overshadowed by Shaq once again. Can you imagine a halfway competent Shaq with Amare up front? And the Suns without the perpetual bitching of Shawn Marion? It’ll be interesting. You know, provided Shaq doesn’t have the ultimate old man injury.

Top Ten Tuesday: coaches picks, media picks and how I picked

Since the CIS basketball top-ten has been much discussed this year and since there’s a new poll (that I’m a part of), I thought it’d be interesting to see how close each of the polls are to the other. First, this week’s CIS coaches poll: Keep reading →

I’m sorry basketball. I’ll never stray again.

I came home last night from covering the wildest hockey game I’ve seen all year, thinking that I’d gotten all the excitement I could hope for watching a near goalie brawl (not shown in the video) in the midst of this (***Disclaimer: this is the only time I’ll put hockey highlights up here. Unless it’s some NHL guy saying that he can play ball***):

Little did I know that the NBA felt my betrayal and in turn acted like a jealous girlfriend, flaunting its best qualities to get my attention back. First, TJ Ford played for the Raps last night in Miami:

Deron Williams said to Chris Paul, “Hey Chris Paul, I’m the best pg in the league. Eat these crossovers and take an ass-whupping back to New Orleans. Have fun at the all-star game, you d*ck.”

Travis Outlaw had a nasty dunk against Denver last night, but I can’t find video of it. Enjoy these while they’re still up.

And basketball, I’m sorry. It meant nothing to me, I did it for the money.

“…Who Actually Do Some Homework Preparing Themselves For The Poll”

As promised, here’s the link to the radio show where Dave DeAveiro talks about the Gee-Gees Hour Presents the MBNA Capital Hoops Classic (lawsuit pending), the CIS Top Ten and assorted other issues. His interview is the first thing up so there’s no need to search through the entire podcast for it.

It was noticeable while he was in studio and it’s even more apparent listing to the sessionĀ  afterwords that DeAverio becomes a lot more comfortable as the interview rolls along.

upei vs sfx. “solid entertainment”

a couple of notes from the beginning of the game:

1) i watch SFX intently during their warm-up. they look good. they could be trouble. this could be a great game!

2) i am pleasantly surprised when the announcer says that Jared Cheverie, who was acting head coach after Matthew Davies’ ejection yesterday, is the acting head coach today. this is promising. this could mean good things. i definitely preferred his coaching yesterday. hrrrm.

i don’t really have much to say about the first quarter. it’s best summed up by steph shantz’s comment that “this is kind of like watching highschool ball.” the quarter ends with a score of UPEI 12 SFX 17.

Gee-Gees! Varsity Blues! Who Wants to be the (Second) Best?!?

Late is better than never, as my non-existent post on the game aspect of the Capital Hoops Classic proves. I’d say sorry, but i’m not really so lets just move on.

Coming into the game last night, the Gee-Gees sat second in the OUA East just behind Carleton and just ahead of Toronto having played one more game thanks to a Tuesday (huh?) game against Queen’s. Given that no one’s going to catch the Ravens for top spot in the division, this game was a showdown for second and home court into the playoffs. A pretty big game that felt even bigger because the Rogers Channel (like #10 Shaw in Edm) picked up the game and the stands were actually pretty packed for match up. Considering that 31cm of snow had just finised falling the turnout was amazing and there was a pretty good buzz in the gym.
