The NCAA tournament started this morning and I can safely say that so far, it’s been a great day for shirking responsibilities and not showering. More importantly, despite this being heralded as one of the least exciting college basketball seasons on record, this is the most fun I’ve had watching the tourney in years.
Why?
Because I didn’t pick brackets this year.
I’m sitting here watching Cornell get their ivy league asses handed to them by Stanford and have no worries about Cornell pulling off the impossible and spoiling my bracket early. I have no allegiance to USC or Kansas State, who tip off in a couple of hours. I just want to see Mike Beasley and OJ Mayo go at each other; I don’t care who comes out on top.
I knew the bracket system was a bad one for me when I first started doing it three years ago. Duke was playing against a nobody school and was about to lose and all I could think was, “No, my bracket!” I mean, for Christ’s sake, I was cheering for Duke!
This year, I want Duke out in the first round. Cornell’s gonna get smoked out of the gym before the half’s over, but if they don’t, that’s great. I like North Carolina. Tyler Hansbrough is a monster, and deserves much, much better than his crappy “Psycho T” nickname.
My god. CBS has interrupted their broadcast of the tourney to show Dr. Phil. Seriously. Thank god for The Score.

His nickname is “Psycho T”? Worst. nickname. evAR.
Also: I just have to gush. Oh my god! Oh my god! I can’t wait to have access to a TV again. I’m going to spend every spare minute I have watching TSN and the Score. . .
This whole “life without a TV” thing has made me realize that I NEED a tv. For video gaming purposes and to watch sports. You see that, stereotypes? FUCK YOU.

For some reason, my copy of SI with Hansbrough on the cover came a week late. There’s a great feature on him and his family.
Nessa, you could be watching webcasts of the tourney. It doesn’t compare to TV, but you’re still watching it. And I can guarantee, without having looked at the NCAA’s site, that the webcasts will be superior to the bush-league garbage I had to watch the last month through CIS.

Ah, yes, except that I also don’t have the internet at my house. (i *was* leeching off of some poor sucker who didn’t close his/her network…but that network disappeared about a month ago and i’ve been relying on the free wifi at the library ever since. the bandwidth here su-hucks waay too hard for me to watch streaming webcasts of ball games)
