In my corner of the country, there are 17 minutes left in this busy Tuesday of mine. As promised, a look at the nation’s top-ten CIS basketball polls and how everyone voted. First, the coaches stab at it:

I feel better about the vote this week. Alberta’s ranked higher than I have them, but I felt like two wins against Lethbridge isn’t the toughest task in the world. I’ve been cautious about voting the Bears too high, lest I look like a homer. I dropped Ottawa down, but not as much as the rest of the voters did. Depending on just how injured JGB’s RIGHT KNEE and ANKLE are, it sounds like they’re all but done. Another team I’m not sure about is Laval. Sure they’re winning a lot, but it seems like they don’t have any comp in the QSSF. My answer was to put them at 12th.
I’ll try and get a Bears playoff preview post up here before Friday.

So. Perhaps this is because I’m not a “media type.” Or because I have very little interest in polls of any kind (polls tend to be fairly inaccurate). Um. But. I’m curious what these CIS basketball polls accomplish?
Mister O’Leary! Mister O’Leary! A follow-up question: Why do you feel compelled to submit rankings?
Thanks in advance!

A recent poll I saw suggested that YOU were fairly inaccurate, V. Thoughts?
There have been complaints for a long time about the coaches’ poll, saying that the coaches votes aren’t entirely objective and that once you get into the top ten it’s tough to get out (see Concordia’s lengthy stay this season) and conversely once you’re out it’s hard to get in (see Ottawa’s struggles to get into the top ten early in the season). There are flaws to the coaches poll, like how if a team in the top ten loses, they can only drop down three spots per loss. The poll also has weight in determining who the wild card birth would go to at the end of the season. Since I’m not a coach I could be wrong about this part, but if the poll plays a part in picking a wildcard, a team like Concordia that shouldn’t have been in the top ten as long as it was would have a greater likelihood of getting the wildcard than a deserving team like the Bears, who have loomed on the outskirts of the top ten for the majority of the season.
So to answer your question, I feel compelled to submit rankings because I think it’s important to offer up a more balanced look at the top ten that could/should exist outside of the coaches’ eyes. I think an ultimate goal of the cishoops.ca poll is to take the place of the coaches’ poll and have that weight on the wildcard spot at nationals.
Plus, it’s fun to rank things. I rank this comment one of my lengthier, less-exciting ones on this site.

Damn. I’d say the poll about me is pretty accurate. Don’t I feel like an asshole.
(ps. thanks for answering. i didn’t know the coach poll had any weight in picking a wildcard. interesting.)

There was a followup poll on you and it (very accurately, it turns out) said you’d feel like an asshole over that.
