Court Surfing and CanCon on the NCAA court in Spokane

ThisĀ  morning couldn’t have started out any worse. Blowing snow and destructive winds made me actually wish I had driven to work rather than take the five-minute walk it takes to get there. Throw in the rigors of a day where a deadline looms and I was more than ready to get home tonight and watch some ball.

I got home in time to watch the second half of the Miami-Charlotte game. It was my first time seeing the Heat this year and watching them made me wish I was back at work. I can’t remember a time watching the Heat where they were so bad. Shaq was a non-factor after scoring 13 first-half points. He disappeared in the third quarter after Gerald Wallace swatted the sh*t out of the reverse layup that Shaq would have dunked even two years ago. If you’re a Shaq fan, a Heat fan or someone who happens to get to watch a lot of Miami games, these have to be unbearable times for you. There’s something sad about watching the Most Dominant Ever turn into an older version of DeSagana Diop. I won’t watch the Heat again until D-Wade’s back. I can’t handle it.

Court Surfing might be the single-most important contribution to Canadian basketball circles mankind that a TV channel could ever make. In the limited minutes I saw from them tonight, Boston looked great once again. The more I see of them the more I think the East is theirs for the taking, provided they stay healthy.

I fluked out and happened to catch the Spokane channel showing a Gonzaga game. They thumped Idaho, beating them by 36 or something. Rob Sacre and Theo Davis got garbage time minutes in the game. Sacre had a nice dunk and Davis had an offensive board and a putback in about three minutes of play. It’ll be interesting to see if Mark Few can put last season’s drama (Davis was the guy in the car with Josh Heytvelt when they got caught with drugs last February) behind him with Davis, who could easily be the coach’s whipping boy all year. Heytvelt is too big to really get a lot of sh*t for it, but Davis red-shirted last year and is the 12th man on the team this year. It’d be an interesting story to write.

Anyway, I need milk and I’m gonna go hit the treadmill before calling it a night.
